at tea school, i met a brilliant tea master named wenxin. over the course of five months, i visited her home more times than i can count—sitting at her tea table, learning from her expertise, meeting her family, and spending weekends immersed in the world of tea 💕

wenxin and i have attended tea tastings and competitions together, her sharing with me everything that she knows, and drinking more tea than i ever thought possible. an epic tea master, she has taught me so much 🥹

one afternoon, in the middle of a particularly intense tasting session, i casually asked her where i could find the perfect alishan. without a moment’s hesitation, she got up, disappeared into her tea stash, and returned with a huge bag of it. ‘here,’ she said, handing it to me like it was the simplest thing in the world 🎁

i took it home, brewed a cup, and the moment i tasted it, i knew—this was it. the perfect alishan. no searching, no second-guessing. it had found me instead.

so, naturally, i went back for more. one bag for me, and one for you. ✨

ruby red 18 is a tea which is famous all around the world, yet the best quality is kept exclusively *inside* of taiwan. and now, after trying it straight from the source, we totally get why they keep the good stuff a secret 🧚🏻

after several weeks based in taipei, i was finally accepted into tea school. with classes taught exclusively in Mandarin and the reading materials very difficult to translate, it was a pretty difficult starting point 😬

one of my teachers, five months later, invited me to a four-hour ruby red 18 tasting. that’s where I both ran my first ever taiwanese tea ceremony AND found the perfect ruby red: with malty sweetness intertwined with caramel undertones, it was the best one I had ever tasted—and he felt the same 🍵

to celebrate, as seen in the last video, the first time I tried our first order of the tea, I did so in a solid jade teacup from my school. it made me realise that beyond its incredible tea, taiwan’s warmth and hospitality create a truly special and welcoming place 🇹🇼❤️

this taiwanese treasure, with its creamy texture, floral whispers, and bold roasted soul has enchanted tea lovers for over a century. but two months into the search for the perfect dong ding for our taiwanese tea collection and i was getting tired 🥱

suddenly, out of nowhere, a message arrived from xin qing, a woman whose family had been growing tea for generations. she’d spotted my posts in a local tea group and invited me to her home for a tasting. who was i to say no? 👀

their home was a cosy haven filled with the comforting scent of freshly brewed tea. xin qing’s family welcomed me with warm smiles and stories, and they told me all about their family’s deep roots in the lugu region. somehow, i’d ended up in the heartland of dong ding 🥹

but the real adventure began when they whisked me away to the mountains, and winding roads hugged by clouds led us higher and higher until we reached their tea fields. mist clung to the leaves as their family hand-picked them with graceful precision 🌱

back at their home, xin qing finally shared a pot of their prized dong ding. from the first sip, i knew this was the one—it had the perfect harmony of flavours, crafted by nature and nurtured by loving hands 🙌🏻

our destination was a secluded tea field nestled high in the mountains, where we were treated to bowls of traditional taiwanese food and a selection of exquisite teas 🍲

I spent one week in the area, tasting seemingly hundreds of cups of tea until finally I found this incredible fushou lishan. its golden hue and creamy floral notes, mixed with layers of delicious sweetness and richness, meant that I simply HAD to add it to our taiwanese tea collection 🍵

it became clear that sometimes, the most beautiful finds happen when surrounded by nature, good company, and obviously, the perfect cup of tea 🌿

Cui Feng is a masterpiece of Taiwanese tea known for its floral aroma and creamy texture. finding this tea was a real journey of its own. 🍵

drawn by whispers of its origin, I hitched a ride towards Li Shan, the famed mountain of Taiwan’s finest teas. the loveliest lady picked me up and when I mentioned I was looking for Taiwan’s best teas, she smiled and offered to take me to her family’s tea shop in a very small town several hours away ✨

her whole family welcomed me with warm hospitality, their shop filled with the earthy, floral scents of freshly packed tea. after they’d cooked and taken photos with me, they brought out a tea they said was their personal favorite—a Cui Feng from the local fields 😋

they brewed the tea Gongfu style, pouring the golden liquid into tiny porcelain cups. the first sip was genuinely incredible: i tasted a swirl of floral, creamy, and subtly sweet notes whilst the family watched me and nodded in approval 👩🏻‍🍳

I never made it to Li Shan that day, but I didn’t need to. as it happened, everything I needed was in this very small town, 100km away from where I thought I was meant to be 🥰

• Shengtai White: while traveling northern Taiwan, the aforementioned Jiu took me to a small tea shop in his hometown. the owner brewed no less than sixteen teas for us to taste, and I found my new favourite white tea 🥰

• Cui Feng: on a hitchhiking trip to Li Shan, a kind woman picked me up and brought me to her family’s tea shop. they made me food, we shared gifts from our home countries, and we drank so much delicious Cui Feng 🌱

• Alishan: I attended a tea tasting competition with my tea master friend Wenxin. amid the competitive energy and endless cups of tea, she handed me this Alishan, a favourite from her collection, and I knew I had to share it 🥹

recently, we had the opportunity to indulge in a rather fancy collection of pairings, and after a week exploring many different flavours and styles, these are our favourites:

1. custard-filled bao with a light Sichuan black tea: the malty black tea goes so well with the sweetness of the bao 🐷

2. tossed scallion oil noodles with tangerine pu’er: the citrusy pu’er lifts the umami richness of the noodles 🍊

3. spinach and bamboo broth with a rose green tea: the fragrant rose tea adds a delicate touch to the earthy broth 🌹

4. lemon sorbet with 2015 shou pu’er: the aged, smooth shou pu’er balances the sharp acidity of the lemon 🍨

over the course of the day, the family showed us how to make the cakes, prepare them for baking, and then savour them alongside a good cup of locally-grown tea 🍵

ruby red 18 is a tea cultivated primarily around the sun moon lake area in taiwan. here, the temperature is cool, there’s plenty of rainfall, and the altitude is around 2,450ft above sea level: the perfect condition for the perfect tea 🌱

the '18' in the name comes from the specific cultivar number assigned to this hybrid by the taiwan tea research and extension station (TRES), who created the tea. TRES crossed the native wild tea plant, camellia formosensis, with camellia sinensis var. assamica, resulting in a robust and resilient hybrid. how bloody cool is that?!

the flavor of ruby red 18 is complex and layered, and you might notice notes of plum, cinnamon, clove, mint, and honey. frankly, this is one of our favourite things about taiwan ♥️

here, all of the staff are speech and hearing impaired, and as such, you communicate through notes, word blocks, and gestures. the word blocks display simple words like ‘bill,’ ‘thank you,’ and ‘ice,’ making sure that every one feels comfortable and understood 💕

after spending hours exploring the busy streets of hội an, sitting back in the reaching out teahouse with its hushed tones and delicious vietnamese tea is a welcome respite. here, you can find peace and support an important social enterprise at the same time 🥰

during the time that these ceramics were made, the ming dynasty in china had banned maritime exports to southeast asia, giving vietnam the chance to create some of the most precious handmade crafts on earth — and boy, were they beautiful.

the owner of the shop welcomed me during an unexpected storm and introduced herself simply as ‘Ba’, meaning ‘grandmother’. she showed me around her house, pointing out overflowing stacks of beloved pottery and altars dedicated to her ancestors. i spent hours there; her son offered me tea.

most of her ceramics aren’t perfect—many are faded, chipped, or broken. but the beautiful blue glaze has endured, and Ba was proud of every single one of them.

before i left, she gave me one key piece of advice:

‘you can never have too much teaware.’

on the 15 may 2024, buddhists from around korea came together to celebrate the birthday of the buddha, and as i was staying with a local family whilst attending tea school, i got to join them!

each family celebrates this day a little differently, but they usually visit a temple, partake in local celebrations, and eat together. this year, my korean family took me to a local temple to write our wishes and play games, cooked several traditional jeju meals together, and then ended the day with a trip to a local tea field! 🌱

needless to say, south korea and it’s hospitality and, of course, tea culture, is something i greatly admire ♥️

tea pets are little figurine friends meant to keep you company as you sip. typically, they are left unglazed so that they may ‘drink in’ the tea as you pour a little over them 🥺♥️

our tea pets are handmade by @croucher.li and with a very limited stock, each one is completely unique! they are all super cute with their big noses and flushes cheeks, and we can’t wait for them to join your next tea ceremony 💕✨

recently, i spent time with three different tea makers across thailand to understand more about cha yen, the famous thai milk tea, and the people who make it.

first, i met tuk, who has been running her tea stall for 14 years. 57 years old and single and with no children, she dedicates herself to her small business, making the classic cha yen with a mix of black and oolong tea, condensed milk, and ice for the hot weather.

then, i met kyawkyawmin, who has been living in thailand for 28 years and making tea here for 20. originally from myanmar, a country which he doubts he will ever return to, he supplies tea to the mostly burmese local town population. he helps other burmese with their work permits and gives away all leftover food at the end of the day, forming a special burmese tea community.

and finally, i met this wonderful 31 year old lady who is the third generation to run her tea shop, and most likely the last. she told me that the “younger generation wants to do other things than tea,” but for now, she will continue to spend her time making cha yen nonetheless. it’s delicious, and worth every second of my cha yen search.

he cracked a blue duck egg into a glass, added white and palm sugar, and blended it until the mixture thickened. then, he poured it into a cup of strong black tea where it immediately separated, forming a clear line of dark tea and pale foam.

the tea was delicious.

we sat at the smoky stall drinking teh talua, and rio explained that most of his customers were from padang, coming to savour the flavours of their childhood.

“so you like teh talua?” i asked.

rio laughed, raised his cup, and spoke bluntly.

“i’m from batusangkar, of course i do.”
